What Denomination is Black Church? The 7 Major Black Church Denominations

Some Black Churches today can be traced all the way back to the early 1800s, and a lot of that traditionalism shines through in the worship experience and the attire you’ll see filling up the pews. On the other hand, very modern denominations have emerged more recently.

So, what denomination is Black Church? It could be any of these seven different denominations, which is why it’s so important that you do your due diligence before heading to service so you 1) know what to expect and 2) can prepare yourself accordingly.

National Baptist Convention

This is the largest Black Church denomination in the country by far. The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. was incorporated when three existing Baptist bodies came together to merge in Atlanta all the way back in 1895.

Baptist theology means each congregation gets to govern itself. This is why worship can vary so much from one church to the next. Preaching is always the main event, but music can range from traditional hymns to more contemporary gospel songs. The Baptist church dress code is fairly traditional.

Church of God in Christ

Shortened as COGIC, this is the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States. It was founded by Bishop Charles Harrison Mason back in 1897. It’s headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee today.

African Methodist Episcopal 

The AME church was founded by Richard Allen in Philadelphia in 1816. The movement began when Allen and other Black worshippers were literally pulled off their knees during prayer at a mostly white Methodist church. This led to one of the first Black denominations in the country.

AME worship is usually more structured than both Baptist and Pentecostal services. It follows a very set liturgical order. The Methodist dress code is as traditional as the services themselves.

African Methodist Episcopal Zion

AME Zion is also known as “The Freedom Church.” It gained that namesake because of its connection to the abolition movement. It was founded shortly after the AME church in New York City in 1821. The congregation consisted of historical figures like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth. 

Fast forward to today, and AME Zion is still around. The services and expectations for dress closely mirror those of the original AME church. However, there’s a little more room for congregational participation and contemporary music. 

Christian Methodist Episcopal

The CME church was formed in 1870 when formerly enslaved members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South decided to come up with their own self-governed denomination. It was originally called the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, but changed to what we know it by today back in 1954.

The tone of a CME service is generally quieter and more liturgical. There’s a massive emphasis put on community outreach and education. 

Progressive National Baptist Convention

The civil rights movement spawned the PNBC in 1961. Leaders felt the National Baptist Convention was not doing nearly enough to support the struggle its people were facing. So, they broke away and formed their own body. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a prominent member. 

Progressive National Baptist Churches are known for being really active on a social level. They are quick to engage in present-day political discourse, keeping true to their roots of fighting for what is right. Think of it as a blend between traditional Baptist preaching but with a more forward-looking mission.

Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship

The newest major Black church denomination. Full Gospel was founded just over 30 years ago by Bishop Paul S. Morton in New Orleans. This is a hybrid of Baptist theology with Pentecostal worship practices. 

Thus, you can expect an energetic, lively, emotionally open experience with lots of music. It’s one of the denominations that most people associate with “fun,” but still traditional in a sense. 

Differences in Worship Style Across Denominations

The approach to Sunday morning service is a little different across each denomination. 

Methodist services like AME, AME Zion, and CME all follow a liturgical order. That means responsive readings, hymns, and a formal progression. The pastor leads while the congregation responds on cue.

On the other hand, Baptist churches (National Baptist, Progressive National Baptist) place a much stronger emphasis on the sermon itself. The message can last from 30 minutes to well over an hour. There’s a lot of call-and-response between the pastor and the congregation, still.

Pentecostal and charismatic traditions (COGIC and Full Gospel) are by far the most expressive. There’s spontaneous praise, speaking in tongues, laying on of hands, and music building in waves throughout the entire service. There’s no real set clock. As they say, the flow follows the Spirit! 

What to Wear Across Black Church Denominations

The underlying principle doesn’t change from one Black church denomination to the next. Show up as if this is the most important event on your calendar for the week - because it is.
