Our style experts put together this guide on what to wear to a women’s conference to help you feel more confident getting dressed or packing for a multi-day outing. What to Wear to a Women's Church Conference
The first thing you need to do is check the registration materials for a specific dress code - because that’s going to clear the air more than anything else. No two church conferences are exactly the same, so it’s hard to give you a one-size-fits-all recommendation without more details.
No sort of dress code listed on the invite, website, or flyer? Don’t sweat it. You can look for photos from last year’s conference either online or on social media. You’ll see right away whether women showed up in suits and hats or in cardigans and flats.
Our style experts say you should go one notch above your regular “Sunday best” when in doubt. If you’d typically wear a knit church dress, maybe you go with a silk or structured piece for the main session at the conference.
You should also think about the church dress code for your denomination. What to wear to a women's conference at a Pentecostal church is not the same as a non-denominational one. Find out before you pack.
Here are some more tips on what to wear to a women’s church conference, including some specific outfit ideas our fashionistas pulled straight from the catalog for you.
Think About the Setting
What to wear to a women's conference depends on where you're headed to some extent. A Saturday morning event at your home church isn’t the same as a national conference in a hotel ballroom.
You already know the culture at your own church. Dress the way you would for a special occasion Sunday service with a guest speaker and you'll be fine.
What about regional and national conferences, though? You’ll be conferencing with women from churches you've never visited, and everybody brings their best for the opening night. We’ve always found that things loosen up quite a bit by day two. Workshops are less formal. Cardigans come out during breakout sessions.
Multi-day conferences can be tricky because you need outfits for 3-4 days without overpacking. You can get creative to wear the same pieces a few times. Wear the same blazer over a dress on day one and over a blouse with pants on day three. Nobody will notice, trust us!
Balancing Style and Modesty
There’s a fine line to toe here. You want to look put together. But nobody should end up paying more attention to your outfit than to the speaker. This is still a church event at the end of the day, which means respect and reverence come before anything else.
Same coverage as Sunday. Hemlines at or below the knee, sleeves you feel good in. You don’t want to be constantly adjusting your neckline every time you stand up for praise and worship. Modesty matters. Err on the side of more coverage > not enough coverage when in doubt.
Fabric needs to be carefully thought out, too. Expect to sit in a chair for hours at a time. Knit and crepe work best because they breathe and won’t get wrinkly as soon as you sit down. Heavy brocade or stiff satin are on the other end of the spectrum - they’ll leave you fidgeting within minutes of sitting down.
Some of Our Favorite Women's Church Conference Outfits
We get asked what to wear to a women's conference more than pretty much anything else from April through June. We always ask more follow-up questions because it depends on the event, but you honestly can’t go wrong with any of these church conference outfits for women.
A Silk Skirt Suit for the Keynote
You’ll want to rock your best look for the keynote. We sell more silk suits during conference season than almost any other time of year.
A two-piece Lily and Taylor suit in emerald or plum, a Giovanna three-piece with a rhinestone closure, makes a statement. These suits don't need much else. Closed-toe heels, maybe a clutch. Let the suit do the talking.
A Knit Dress You Can Wear All Day
We mentioned earlier that knit doesn't wrinkle when you sit for three hours, and that alone makes it the best fabric for a jam-packed conference schedule.
Donna Vinci's knit dresses come with built-in rhinestone detailing, so you don’t need to stress about matching jewelry. Again, you can let the outfit be the centerpiece.
You need at least one knit piece if you’re packing for a multi-day event. It gives you a level of flexibility you won’t get with other outfits, looking just as beautiful at the 4 pm session as it did that morning when you went through registration.
A Jacket Dress Set
We sell a lot of jacket dress sets to women shopping for conferences, and you’ll see why once you pull yours on while you’re at the event. It gives you versatility. You can take the jacket off at lunch and pretty much reveal a whole new look for the second half of the day.
Go with a navy or burgundy midi dress with a matching jacket. Tally Taylor and Terramina both sell these as matched sets, so the colors actually coordinate - no need to play the guessing game under hotel room lighting!
Dress Pants with a Statement Blouse
Workshops don't necessarily call for a dress or a full-fledged statement suit. These more casual outings let you simplify your outfit with tailored pants, a good blouse, a belt, and earrings. You're sitting in a circle taking notes, not walking across a stage.
That’s the thing - some conferences are genuinely casual. Youth ministry weekends, outdoor retreats, camp settings. Figuring out what to wear to a women's conference is way more straightforward in these cases, obviously. Wear a midi skirt and a blouse, or a cotton dress and sandals.
Just one word of caution - leave the jeans at home unless the invite says otherwise.
Don't Overlook Your Footwear and Accessories!
Conferences usually mean walking, even if it’s just from the parking lot to the sanctuary, to breakout rooms, and then to the dining hall. All those steps add up, so wear shoes that your feet can handle all day. Dressy flats are a great choice. Test whatever you plan to wear before the event. Blisters on the first day will ruin the rest of your week.
Church hats are welcome at the main session. A hat in a matching color can transform a simple dress or suit into a statement piece. Fascinators are fine if a full hat isn't your thing.
Pair with a matching clutch, tote, or crossbody. You need your phone, a pen, the program, and probably a water bottle. Don’t want to be lugging those around by hand all day!
